The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a nonprofit nongovernmental organization.
It was created in 1993 by a group representing various organizations from 25 countries.
These organizations include environmental groups,
social, timber trade and forest industry sector.
The FSC has developed principles and criteria of management
(FSC P & C) which determine what constitutes a
good forest
management. Forests whose management is evaluate
independently and that comply with P & C may be certified
as well managed by the FSC.
All projects for conformance to the FSC should
involve national and international stakeholders.
Interested parties are represented by individuals
or groups involved or affected by forest management,
because they often live in forest resources, or
near these forests. Other groups may have social or
environmental concerns over
exploitation of the forest,
or concerns related
to health and safety of workers.
The FSC has three roles:
See the approval of regional standards, developed with regional stakeholders, and ensure that they meet the Principles and Criteria and the FSC policies.
Accrediting agencies for registration, third parties may provide FSC certification for forestry and chain of custody.
Developing networks of supply and demand.
